Topic: Phrase
Phrase is a group of words without a subject and a verb combination. That is , any group of words that do not have a subject nor a verb is a phrase and cannot communicate a complete thought.
Examples
1. A blackboard
2. Beautiful peacock
3. Are sleeping
4. In the rain.
The above examples are phrases and are incomplete expressions which cannot be called sentences.
TYPES OF PHRASES
1. NOUN PHRASE : A group of words having a noun as the main word. E.g a tree , the book on the table, some people...
2. Verb phrase: a group of words having an auxiliary verb and a main verb. E.g are sleeping, will have gone, was reading...
3. Adjectival phrase: a group of word having an adjective as a key word. E.g Beautiful woman, very tall man, quite big...
4. Prepositional phrase: a group of words that begin with a preposition. E.g in a minute, to the bank, behind the school...
